Make Space for Bass

A step-by-step Ableton Live mix recipe to help you get tight, solid low end in all your tracks.

Bassheads and Ableton addicts -- are you struggling to mix the low frequency range in your tracks?

Do your songs sound good in your monitors, but when you play them somewhere else the kick drum is suddenly missing?

Did you ever try to play an original track at a live show, and it sounded so horrible, you wanted to crawl under the DJ booth and die?

Do you get lost looking at the ocean of plugins because you don't know which one to use?

I know how you feel. I've been there.

And I have a shortcut for you.

Wouldn't you love to hear a GIGANTIC BASS DROP coming from one of your own tracks on a huge sound system?

Can you imagine feeling your music touch the crowd like a professionally-mastered track?

Imagine playing a new track at a gig next weekend and hearing your friends say, "How did you get that bass to drop like that?!"

Wouldn't it be great to finish an album and KNOW that the bass is going to sound amazing, without spending hundreds of dollars on studio time to mix it?

Here's the shortcut -- it's a simple mix recipe that gives you rock-solid bass in your Ableton sessions.

Make Space for Bass is a step-by-step mixing course to help you get tight, solid bass in all your tracks, using only the built-in Ableton Live audio effects.

Here's what you get in the course

session lessons: Each module has a Live set that opens with built-in lessons to take you through the mix process step by step, using plugins & processing chains right inside the session.

tutorial videos: You do the hands-on examples yourself, with video tutorials to help if you get lost. (.mp4 downloads and on youtube)

one-on-one video workshop: where we get to know each other and look at the practice examples together. (this is the most fun, it's almost like hanging out in person!)

That's not all. I know some people love learning with podcasts, so I also include a soundcloud audio version of the lesson that you can listen to when you're on the move

support materials: I throw in a few PDFs with critical ideas to keep for reference

sound packs ...and a folder of sounds to use with the examples in each lesson (AKA "now you have crazy fun making new beats.")

Steve Knots

Hi, I'm Steve Knots, bass explorer who started mixitecture.com.

I've been playing original live electronic music since 1999, teaching private students in Ableton Live since 2008 and I'm looking forward to doing the Ableton Certified Trainer program the next time they offer it in my area.

I went from driving a taco truck to making a living with music and if I can do it, YOU can do it too.

So far I've put out six albums, held DJ residencies in one of the busiest tourist cities in Europe, worked as a soundman at hundreds of concerts, and played original electronic music on 20 kilowatt festival sound systems.

In addition to 15+ years of experience in live sound, studio production, and performance, I have a Fine Arts degree in music theory and audio engineering from the Sonic Arts Center at The City College of New York (BFA 2003 | PBK).

A few words about the course from people who loved it

I really liked this, this is what a course should be like! I like your no BS approach and it shows that you love what you are doing, which is the most important thing.

Integrating the lesson with actually trying stuff out in Ableton is great, since I am a "learning by doing" kind of guy.

Can't really come up with something negative at the moment, keep this up!" -- Mikael Kallin, Switzerland

"My latest track sounds infinitely better than anything before. The lessons are laid out well, and you cover a lot of material in-depth.

You kept the lessons entertaining to watch as well, and your pro-tips were useful and reassuring. Thank You!" -- Manny Sabol, US

MY NO-RISK OFFER TO YOU

If you put Make Space for Bass into action and are not satisfied with the results, I'll buy it back from you.

I understand that there are a lot of products out there, and you may have been unimpressed by some of them.

That's why I want to give you an opportunity to use the MFSB lessons on a real session of your own.

  • If you buy MSFB and it doesn't help you, I will give you a full refund
  • with no questions asked
  • You have 30 days to make up your mind

This course has the power to take you from "what is wrong with my mixes?" to "OMFG PLAY THAT AGAIN!!!"

But there are some common myths about bass that we need to bust right now.

I want you to know this before you buy the MSFB course.

  1. YOU DON'T NEED EXPENSIVE STUDIO MONITORS
A good pair of headphones is enough

  2. YOU DON'T NEED A SUBWOOFER IN YOUR STUDIO
Before you know what you are doing, adding a sub will only make your problems worse

  3. YOU DON'T NEED MORE VST PLUGINS
Ableton Live audio effects can do everything we need for this course

  4. YOU DON'T NEED ANALOG PROCESSING GEAR
I teach the analog roots of digital audio. You get the best sound possible with the tools you have now -- and the knowledge transfers to the analog world when you get your hands on it later.

  5. YOU DON'T EVEN NEED TO BOOK TIME TO MIX IN A RECORDING STUDIO CONTROL ROOM
When you learn to make space for bass in your own sessions, you don't have to spend $50/hour just to get a mix done. Save your money for mastering instead!

OK SO WHO EXACTLY IS THIS COURSE MADE FOR?

Make Space for Bass is designed for Ableton Live9 users who make electronic music.

It works for every genre from trap to hard tekno, DnB, house, global bass, hiphop, future bass, dubstep, reggae even psychedelic cumbia.

You can be a musician who plays live with Live, a DJ, a remix artist, a producer, or a recording engineer and learn from MSFB.

Who is not a good fit?

if you are doing rock band music with 24 mics on the drum kit, this is not for you.

Acoustic musicians, jazz virtuosos, singer/songwriter people -- I love what you do but this course will not flatter your talents... unless you are interested in adding heavy synth sub bass and beats...

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have Ableton Live 9.5 to do the course?
No. If you have an older version of live, you will still be able to do the lessons. Instead of opening the .alp live set, you can follow the steps in writing from a PDF document. It's the same thing, except the words are not in the sidebar of the Ableton software. I designed the course to use only the plugins that are available for all versions of Live, and I teach you how to use the plugins as if they were analog hardware. That means you learn HOW TO USE THE PLUGINS while you build your audio FX racks. You get all the same sound files to do the exercises, all the same tutorials and video meetings, etc. The only thing you will be missing are the bonus instruments (sub-synth and subby kicks drum rack).
When does the course start and finish?
The course starts when the modules go live on December 6th, 2016 and never ends! It is a completely self-paced online course - you decide when you start and when you finish.
How long do I have access to the course?
How does lifetime access sound? After enrolling, you have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like - across any and all devices you own.
What if I am unhappy with the course?
If you're unhappy with MSFB, contact me in the first 30 days and I will either help you solve your problem, or give you a full refund. See the returns policy and 30-day money back guarantee above. It's no-risk, I'm a real person, and I understand that sometimes unexpected things happen. --Steve Knots
When do I get access to the course materials?
You get the full course materials starting December 6th, 2016. New modules will be delivered each week, two at a time throughout the month of December, giving you time to do the examples and build new songs as you learn.
Does MSFB teach me how to mix a whole track?
No, this course does not go into detail about how to make a final stereo mix. Make Space for Bass teaches you how to get really good sounding bass in your track, and how to make a rough mix that is ready for the finishing touches. You will learn the fundamental tools of audio engineering in this course, and later we will apply the same tools to everything else -- drums, vocals, instruments, effects. When you get the bass right, everything else is easy.

If you're ready to say YES to amazing low end in your tracks, then sign up to Make Space for Bass. See you inside.
